As we wrap up the year, the air is full of talk about resolutions and big goals for 2026. New systems, new plans, new promises. But today, I want to flip the script. Sometimes progress does not come from doing more. It comes from doing less.

In this post, we are going to focus on what to stop doing so you can create clarity, reduce stress, and move into 2026 with intention.

Reevaluate Your Financial Approach

Before you jump into another ambitious plan for the new year, pause. Last week we talked about creating a vision for the year ahead. Today is about making room for that vision.

Progress does not require hype or pressure. It requires honesty, reflection, and simplification. If your finances feel heavy, crowded, or overwhelming, it is often because too much is being carried at once.

Meet Debt Free Dad

If you are new here, my name is Brad Nelson and I am the founder of Debt Free Dad. I personally paid off forty five thousand dollars of debt and have been debt free for over twelve years. Since then, I have helped thousands of people save money and pay off tens of millions in debt.

If your goal is to reduce financial stress, build real savings, and finally get out of debt for good, you are in the right place. Today I want to help you shift your focus from more to less.

Stop Waiting for the Perfect Time

There is no perfect time to start. That idea keeps more people stuck than almost anything else.

Life does not slow down to make budgeting easier. Waiting is often just fear wearing a polite disguise. Fear of failing. Fear of not doing it right. Fear of not finishing.

Progress comes from starting messy and imperfect with what you have right now. Standing still will never move you forward.

Let Go of the January Reset Mentality

January is not a magical reset button. Your debt does not disappear when the calendar flips. Your habits do not suddenly reset either.

Starting over again and again is exhausting. It keeps people trapped in cycles of guilt and frustration. Instead, build on what you did in 2025.

Look at what worked. Keep it. Look at what did not work. Adjust it. Momentum beats restarting every single time.

Stop Comparing Your Finances to Others

Comparison is a financial trap. Social media shows highlight reels, not real life. You never see the stress, the arguments, or the debt behind the photos.

Your financial journey is personal. It moves at your pace and serves your goals. When you focus on your own numbers and progress, you build healthier habits and far less pressure.

Do Not Try to Fix Everything at Once

A new year often creates urgency to fix everything immediately. That usually leads to overwhelm and then nothing changes.

Complexity shuts people down. Simplicity moves people forward.

Pick one habit. One system. One focus. Go deep instead of fast. Sustainable change comes from consistency, not chaos. Life is busy, so choose wisely.

Celebrate Small Wins

Progress is built in small steps. Every extra dollar toward debt matters. Every unnecessary purchase you skip matters. Every week you save something matters.

Those small wins build confidence. Confidence builds momentum. Momentum changes everything over time.

Moving Into 2026 With a Different Perspective

As you head into 2026, ask yourself this question. What do I need to stop doing to reduce stress and make progress with my money?

Stop waiting. Stop comparing. Stop carrying everything at once. Your vision does not need perfection. It needs clarity and consistency.

If support and accountability are what you are missing, that is exactly why we built Roots.
